I'm thinking about this in terms of a promotion. If I I feel like they deserve it more, and it will be obvious, I'm happy for them. But if I think I deserved it instead, I feel envy, and then I become convinced that the decision was erroneous or that it wasn't really based on merit but favoritism. Then I feel guilty and convince myself that I never really wanted it in the first place.

I would Envy them first and than admire second. Some could look at envy as a way of admiration. To be envious is not necessary a bad thing.

I was once in the running for a very prestigious award among peers. I didn't win...another of my co-workers did. I was disappointed but not to the point of jealousy. After all the person that won was truly the best choice and deserving of it..I was happy to congratulate her without gritting my teeth.

When I see someone receiving an award, I would rejoice with them, because things are as they should be.
