Are you liberal or conservative? If you are conservative and religious-oriented, you will probably prefer Houston. I lived in Sacramento when I was a child. I've lived near Houston for the past thirty years.

There's a good deal of racism and bigotry still alive and well in Houston and surrounding areas. There is a good deal of use of religion as a weapon to keep other people down. I have seen this first hand. From what I remember of Sacramento, I think I'd prefer it.

Beaches in CA are far more beautiful than beaches in Texas.
The ocean is a beautiful blue in CA. It's a muddy brown here in Texas.

If you like six months of *hideously* hot and humid weather, then Houston is for you. Drenchingly humid, like a sauna. Houston weather is ok November through March. The rest of the time, it's miserable.

The traffic in Houston is an absolute nightmare. I don't know what it is like in Sacramento now.

No earthquakes in Houston but....Houston floods a lot when it rains and many roads are deep with water, dangerous and impassable. In the last flood we had, some people died in their cars, misjudging the water depth.

Houston doesn't have seasons. I think Sacramento does, as far as I remember. Houston has mostly pine and coniferous trees. Few trees with leaves, so few color changes in autumn.
Almost never snows. If you like the changing of seasons, you won't like Houston.

The cost of living in Houston is good, compared to the rest of the country. There are many good restaurants, but the same may be true of Sacramento. I don't know. Houston is not big on culture. It's more sports oriented, though the teams are usually less than impressive. The cost of living in California is very high, from what I've heard.

Houston has excellent medical care, including the best cancer hospital in the world- MD Anderson Cancer Center. My son has been getting really superb treatment there.

I believe Houston has average crime statistics as compared to other cities of its size. The crime rate, however, has jumped lately, due to the influx of New Orleans residents making Houston their new home. Houston is also home to a huge population of illegal immigrants. I suppose Sacramento is too.

More to do and see on day trips around Sacramento. Car trips to places outside Houston are looooong drives and boring scenery. Sacramento is surrounded by natural beauty and is a beautiful drive to Natl Parks, etc.

Houston is not zoned, so you have good neighborhoods next to bad, good neighborhoods next to commercial areas, and plenty of bad roads and on-going construction (as in years on-going). Everything is mixed together. When I lived in an apartment in Houston, I only felt safe in gated communities, and even there it didn't always feel safe.

I don't know how Sacramento is zoned.

I hope you can have the opportunity to at least visit both cities before you have to decide. Take into account your drive to and from work. How far it is, how far you're willing to tolerate long drives in bad traffic, whether there is good housing nearby your new job, etc.

Good luck!

I lived in Sacramento for 14 years. Came to Houston 17 years ago to help a friend start a business. I got stuck here. Sacramento is better in every way. I wish I had never left.

Sacramento is a small city and is on the I-80, with close proximity to both SF and Tahoe. The weather is temperate, but it depends on where you are from. Some people think it gets hot in the summers. I think it gets humid in the summers too but nowhere near Houston Hot!
If it were more affordable, I'd live there or near there.

I can't answer in regards to Sacramento-
but I had a friend who lived in Houston
for 3 years-
She said it was terrible-
due to flooding,
(there was a hurricane
while she was there) heat, humidity,
crime rate, pollution, and overall dirtiness.

She & her spouse finally moved to Idaho,
and ar emuch happier.

I would recommend looking up statistical
comparisons on the 2 cities in regards
to per capita income, crime rate, education, etc.

Sacramento may be the lesser of 2 evils.

Just don't go to Indianapolis. I've heard that men are not allowed there for some reason. I wouldn't chance it just to be on the safe side. [Don't worry, it's a private joke.] The beautiful blondie person at the bottom asked: "Oliver T: Help me out on this one...is it because YOU are the only man allowed to visit here? Remember, I'm kinda slow. :-) Oh, wait! Or is it because.....oh I think I get it. You brat!!!" The answer is the first one. I have no idea what you are thinking in your last sentence and this is the truth! I would very much like to KNOW though! lol

If you don't like hot, humid weather in the summer, choose Sacramento, but be ready for the flood if the dams break.
