I ask this because I think I have a genuine fear of darkness. When I am in the dark, my heart races, I start sweating and I sometimes go into panic attacks. It feels like I am in a small box or something. Some people say it is claustophobia (sp?), but I believe its something more because it doesn't matter how small of a space I'm in. What is your insight on this?

I am also affraid of the dark. If I am in the dark, or even sometimes if I close my eyes for too long I start getting REALLY scared. My heart also raises, and I start to panic. I feel like something is going to get me. I need to turn on a light or open my eyes immediately. Like when I'm in the shower washing my face, I have to open my eyes even if I have soap in them just so I'm not scared anymore.

My wife still can't sleep in a completely dark room, she at least has to have a nightlight on. She had a bad fear of the dark growing up and still while it's gotten better, it still shows in that way. I don't think it's as uncommon as you think.

It is an extreme version of a normal fear that everyone has.

Fear of the dark is adaptive--we get injured more often in places where our vision doesn't serve us well.
