i dont think its the fault of Indian people or anyone
i think cricket is generally and widely very popular over there and gets too much media attention
but i think the reason as to why is India so poor in other sports is because Indians generally wants their kids to study the text books more then playing a sport
and not to mention India being a very poor nation has its problem
it lacks the proper infrastructure, limited land, extreme corruption and many things
so as long as India doesnt cope with these problems then i dont think india has any chance in excelling in other sports

hey dilshan, stop pulling india down. it is much better to be losers in cricket and being in India rather than winning world cup and going back to the hell hole called sri lanka
about the question: it is the very good marketing by the BCCI that has generated huge interest in cricket. Other sport organizations were government owned , they ate up the money and never marketed the game to the fans. Other thing is Indians like hero worshipping more than being fans of cricket. That is why tendulkars, ganguly etc creating records in 90's generated this interest even though india hasnt won any major tournament since 1985

Its simply just that way.....although some Indians do favour soccer, and field hockey. But cricket is a big Indian thing where all Indians, no matter what gender or religion, can join together to watch the game, root for the Indian team, and then chat about it. It unites India, and I think that's a good thing.

Thankfully,in India, there's a silent minority, who share your view, but those voices are drowned in the cacophony for cricket.Cricket started becoming popular due to media interest,as a child way back in '70s,I know,I too succumbed to the wiles of this game, thanks solely to AIR commentaries and peer group pressure. If AIR could do that much damage, think of what TV can do in the '80's and 90's.Then cricket entered into a upwards spiral, media thought more people are interested,so they gave it more importance, people thought if media's giving so much support,it must be more important,so more money in ads/sponsorships,more interest,so it went on,the upwards spiral irrespective of setbacks on the way.after '85.Victories,like Natwest or over Pakistan were hyped up to believe that we are/were world beaters(whereas "the world",as far as cricket's considered is not more than a dozen countries). Our last "world" conquering performance was in Australia in '85,so we have won, let's say,the "world championship" tag only twice, but in hockey(truly an international/world sport) we were 9 times world champions(8 times in Olympics, once in '75)and runners up thrice atleast.Actually, cricket then has become a metaphor for our national character, which is laziness,a lazy game enjoyed by lazy people who love to yak, yak, bak, bak before, during and after the game for hours together!!
I can only pray for my country, with due apologies to Tagore
Where the mind's without cricket, where the people have not sunk into dreary desert quicksand of cricketing habit
Where tireless arms, legs and bodies stretch, play, exert and excel themselves in other sports,
Into that heaven of freedom from cricket,my God,let my country awake..................!!!

Cricket is a game anyone can play no matter how poor they are. It is also the best chance many Indians have of escaping from poverty.
