We are having our 3rd Annual Beltane Celebration on May 6th, 2007 in Selah, WA. The difference between this event and the ones we've had in the past is that it will be at a public park. The park staff discourage people putting holes in the ground. So, how can we set up a tall & sturdy Maypole without placing it into the ground. Is there some way of building a heavy stand that will hold it up while the celebrants dance and twine the ribbons around the pole?

What is the pole made out of? if it's sturdy but not super heavy, you can make a stand. I'd get a 2-5 gallon bucket at home depot or similar place, also buy a piece of PVC pipe just a little larger in diameter than the May Pole, and a bag of cement mix. Mix the cement, pour into the bucket and stick the PVC pipe into the center. When the cement dries, you have a HEAVY stand with a pole to insert your May Pole into. Should be sturdy and do the job for you!

Years ago my father had 3 made for my elementary school. They bolted truck tires to a sheet metal bases. In the center they somehow secured the very tall pole to the sheet metal. Someone that knows more about this will have to help you here. They then poured cement in the tire to securely support the pole. They were very heavy, and very secure. The school used them for 10 years, that I know of. ( my father is no longer with me, so I can't ask for the exact method used.)
