I only know myself when I realize that "I, the ego" is a small part of who I am. If I meditate, relax in a beautiful place or manage to "watch" my thoughts, I see my ego self floating by in a feeling, rather than identifying with it.

"I" then become much much more, really a "non-identification-with" or feeling of spaciousness.
I would add that anxiety, self-doubt and other harmful thoughts are not alien to me in any way, but when I see them as part of my "experience" rather than part of my "identity", it is much more helpful.
