I will be getting a laptop for school next year and I'm sick of Windows and definitely ready to try a Mac. All I will really use it for is:

-Surfing internet and watching live baseball games
- Email
-Instant messaging, preferably AIM
-Write papers, powerpoint presentations, and that stuff...
-Listening to music...Itunes
- If it is still working 3 years from now maybe run some software for my home office on it.

so as you can see I wont be doing anything really intense. But Im sick of Windows and heard Vista has a lot of problems, although they might be sorted out by the time school comes around. I know Macs are a little more expensive, but it does fit into my budget. Ive spoken to people who got "great deals" on laptops for like $599, only to see it die within a year. I believe you get what you pay for. So I will be using a laptop for all of the above functions, but I also want a GOOD laptop that will not die after 1 year.

-Surfing internet and watching live baseball games, yes

- Email, yes

-Instant messaging, preferably AIM, yes. Try GAIM.

-Write papers, powerpoint presentations, and that stuff...either pay $400 for MS powerpoint or pay $0 and download openoffice from openoffice.org

-Listening to music...Itunes, use itunes if you want, but I can't stand it. Mplayer for me

- If it is still working 3 years from now maybe run some software for my home office on it...If a mac cant run or recompile your software, get a version of windows XP and using boot camp dual boot vista or XP along with mac os.

Macs are based off of a version of BSD = Unix-like operating system. Personally I am starting to love linux, but to each his own. I don't really like to use MS products much, since I am a student who doesn't make money (and I don't like to pirate software), so instead I use an open source version of linux called OpenSuSe. Now I can write my own software and extend the functionality of my operating system at no cost to me.

The Mac will do everything plus more besides.... just make sure you get the latest model...

Or you could buy a normal PC. and learn Linux Windows you will find out that Linux is more powerful than Miicrosoft and Apple (apple run a type of Linux opperating software (Unix))

Linux O/S is FREE and so is all the software you will ever need, You don't spend a penny if you don't want to, and You can run windows under Linux

check out the websites below and download the opperating software and programs
try ubuntu Linux it is good and well supported

Yes to all. Just be sure to include Apple Care for the Mac you choose to get. Apple Care is usually cheaper on ebay than direct from Apple.

Be informed that Mac dies after a year, too, or even before the year ends. That's how it goes, none is perfect.

Yes, you will be able to do all your simplicities.
