For a history test, I am supposed to find out two things for each of these 4 descriptions:

What might have the US and/or its allies have done to prevent the event?

and

Why didn't the US and/or its allies take action to prevent the event?

These are the four event descriptions:

1. Japanese Imperialism - Japapnese imperialism affected many areas of Asia, including Manchuria, a Chinese territory rich in mineral reserves that were important for supporting the military. The invasion of Manchuria was marked by the indiscriminate killing of unarmed civilians.

2. Munich Agreement - In 1938 Hitler met with British prime minister Chamberlain. Chamberlain appeased Hitler's demands for territory in Czech., setting the stage for Hitler's troops to occupy Czech. and invade Poland.

3. Bombing of Pearl Harbor

4. American Isolationism - In spite of threat of fascist aggresion, US pursued policy of isolationism throughout 1920s-1930s.

Help anyone?

To help stop Japanese imperialism, the US might have stopped sending raw materials during the 20's and 30's. The US might have taken part in the League of Nations and done more to stop Japan early on before they walked out of the LoN.

Hitler was not ready for a war in 1939 nor 1938. There was only one thing that Hitler wanted and it was war. A what if would be if we helped Hitler fight communism. Hitler wanted Russia more than he wanted Britain or France. Other then that there was no way of stopping Hitler.

We knew of Pearl Harbor before it happened. We could have been prepared, and warned Japan. Roosevelt actually wanted it so he could go to war.

To get America out of isolationism would be to participate in the LoN. Other then that America wanted a return to normalcy and did not want to participate in European problems.

1. Japanese Imperialism could have been stopped only through a collective effort of Europe (especially GB and Holland) and the US. The invasion of Manchuria is seen by most scholars as the real beginning of WW2.

2. If France had lived up to its treaty agreements with Czechoslovakia (CS) and defended it, then Germany would have been at war with FR, CS and the USSR. The US was following GB on this one. HAd CS fought Germany alone, they would have lost, but given they were the number 5 industrial country in the world at the time, CS would have prevented Germany from further war for (I would say) at least 5 years.

3. It is a difficult question if more diplomacy would have prevented the Japanese attack. The cutting off of sales of oil to Japan was what showed the Japanese leadership that war with the US was inevitable. And don't believe that Roosevelt knew about the attack. There is no historical evidence of this. This is the same kind of thinking that has people saying Israel was behind 9-11.

4. Isolationism, well in a democracy, you can't prevent ideas. Considering most people felt the US was led into WWI but big industry and the US seemingly gained nothing from WWI, this was a difficult idea to suppress. But even before Pearl Harbour, American opinion was moving towards confrontation with Germany.

Maybe if we knew how to say no with force. Not like some dumb wit in the 30s saying peace in our time. The enemy must realize we are serious. Must remember always give a rat a escape route. When we win give the losers (people not leaders) hope to recover do not take all they have like happened after WWI they lost hope.
Sad to say it was many years ago and now we have forgot our lessons from the past. Our schools are failing us the result is our leaders, media, teachers and kooks who want to understand the ones who what to destroy us.

nicely they have been all responsible for the conflict - Germany and Japan because of the fact the aggressors yet in addition Britain, France and the different international places from the Treaty of Versailles for punishing them. It could not have been prevented. Your very notation of Chamberlain's actions shows this.
