Good article with detail that paints the picture much better than all the newspaper stories I've read.

Why has Bush strained the military? Part of the Bush agenda was to undermine and even break governmental organizations to prove that private industry does it best. The plan all along could have been to run out of soldiers and equipment and then "privatize" more of the military.

On second thought, I don't believe this was the original plan. Bushites didn't know the Iraq war would be so long and difficult, they predicted a cakewalk. But now that the military is becoming depleted, this is a good opportunity for them hire more Blackwater soldiers, and in doing so, they are being consistent with their goal of "reducing" the size of government.

It is ironic that whilst he is waging wars OF terror across the globe, the military is so stretched that it won't be able to defend our interests at home.

Now consider a Muslim Military strategists, with over a billion supporters to call upon in a Holy Jihad looking at this fallacy of a policy. It must be in their interests now to consider the overstretched and worn out military as an easy target.

EDIT: Ruth where have you been? Disingenuous as ever I see. I suppose because it is a magazine that devotes it's entire editorials to the Military makes it defunct.. right? They wouldn't know anything about wars.... right?

It's not strained any more than any other government service. The claims of them being strained got them like $120 billion more in funding for next years budget for a total of $620 billion. Any service that doesn't claim they are strained gets their budget cut.

I don't think that Rum and Cheney knew how tough this slog would be. Bush trusted them over real military minds like Shinseki. Big, big mistake.

It's his sense of patriotism, once he gets the troops into Iraq, he doesn't know how to let go and so they just stay and stay and stay. Put another mark in the incompetent column.

Poor planning. He doesn't know what he is doing. And he's too ignorant to listen to smart people.
