Because most Americans are too afraid to take responsibility for anything, winning OR losing. I just lost everything I own, including three pets that I love, in a fire and now I'm homeless, and some of my friends have actually tried to say it was God's will. I almost punched one in the mouth, then said, "It's God's will that you visit the E.R. after I kick the daylights out of you!"
I feel that as powerful as God is, He or She (or they) sure don't need praise, thanks, or anything else from us puny, stupid humans.
Do you really believe that God is going to take the time to help, say, a football player win ANY game when there is probably much more important work to do out there in the Creation?

You're obviously not familiar with the idea of sports replacing warfare, are you? In Cherokee tradition, there's a particular sport we call anetsodi, similar to lacrosse. It had many religious services that went along with it, as do most Native traditional sports. If you knew that, then you would know why we have that tradition among non-Natives here. We call that particular one "the little brother of war," and treat it almost as though it was a war of sorts. The same thing happens in UK soccer, with the heavy drums and chanting, so non-US people are NOT immune to it.

Its a media requirement! The media in the US absolutely requires certain things in a story, such as interviews with bawling relatives of crime victims, outraged people blaming the government when it rains, AND you have to thank God whenever you win...cuz the morons who write about news and sports are stuck in a rut and do not have the creativity to break the mold.

To each their own, everybody wants their opinions to be right. Whoever wants to thank God should be able to go and do so. If you, don't want to thank him or talk about him or watch him, then don't and do you believe everything that is said? If you don't believe in him then don't. But what about everybody's elses right? Everyone else get their freedom to express their ideas and opinions so why not things or expressions about God?

Don't know but I do find films about football teams turning to God in prayer and then going on to win as very offensive.

Blasphemous in fact.

Well, if marijuana is a performance enhancing drug, then Divine intervention definitely should be.

You thank god, we just give him the medal, after all, he did it right?

i find your question idiotic. i am a triathlete, i am a former college football player and an all-american track athlete ... if it werent for God's creativity i would not be able to do any of the required movements. i give God thanks, as all Christian athletes do, because He built us. He gave us the determination and commitment to also build ourselves instead of sit on the couch pondering meaningless questions.
