There are also some kinds of crazy prehistoric-ish looking sharks that are still around.

Some of those animals that live really far under the surface only come up when they're sick, dying, or confused though.. so it seems weird that they'd actually attack something. It has probably happened nonetheless.

I would say that it is somewhat probable that the ancient monsters are actually giant squid or octopi. It would make sense.

Who knows? People have very good imaginations. Just today at a family gathering someone talked about food being snatched from the back of a pick-up and the person who saw it thought maybe it was Big Foot.

Anything's possible. But people even back then had imaginations and knew how to tell a good story. It's far more interesting to to spin a yarn about a sea madchen than it is to say "saw dead fish on Monday."
