i was just watching the devils/islanders game, and the announcer mentioned that the leafs are probably wondering why the devils didnt start brodeur in the shootout, but i was under the assumption that teams could not just pop in a different goalie in the shootout unless the starting goalie was hurt.

anyone know!?

thanks!

go sabres!!

I believe I heard something on this issue a few weeks ago during a (versus?) telecast. If you replace your goalie in a shootout, the replacement would not be able to warm up etc., which might certainly put that team at a disadvantage. You can find some reference to this in the NHL Rulebook, link given below (89.b (it is note 3) - which states "Once the shootout begins, the goalkeeper cannot be replaced unless he is injured. No warm up shall be permitted for a substitute goalkeeper."

You cannot change your goalie in a shootout.

However, it's totally legal to change your goalie very late in overtime. If you do, the guy who finishes the game in net not only can play the shootout, he must.

I had thought that the Devils might have tried this today (goalie change to Brodeur in the last minute of OT) but they didn't.

They sure can change the goalies in a shootout just as they could during regulation or OT. The Devils had no stake in winning this game. Their spot in the postseason is locked. It made no sense for the Devils to risk injury to their money goalie in a meaningless game.

Rule 84.4 Shootout (excerpt) - "Once the shootout begins, the goalkeeper cannot be replaced unless he is injured. No warm up shall be permitted for a substitute goalkeeper."

You can NOT sub a goalie in a shootout unless he is injured. You CAN sub a goalie before the shootout begins. Once it starts, your goalie is locked in.

You're able to change your goalie any time. They probably didn't put Brodeur in because he would have come in cold and Clemenson played a decent game. Unfortunately Clemenson sucked in the shootout, and even a cold Brodeur wouldn't have let 2 go by him (and I hate Brodeur). Owell, Isles in, Leafs out. Isles will join the Leafs in a week anyways.

You can change your goalie before the shootout but once the shootout starts, the goaltender is stuck in net.

Yup. You can put Scott Gomez in there if you want to.
