Were there gypsies (or the like) in 18th century America?

I'm interested in getting involved in 18th century historical reenacting, and I was wondering if there were gypsies (or a similar kind of people) in America (preferably the Northeast) from 1750 to 1800. I'm interested in portraying a gypsy, or someone of a similar countenance/lifestyle/dress.

Yes. Gypsies are from Europe, and during the 18th century most immigrants were from eastern Europe, in this immigrants gypsies were included; although the number of gypsies was a small percent of the total immigrant population, most gypsies remained in Europe.

No gypsies, according to The Gypsy Lore Society. This ethnic group has been in the U.S., Canada and Central America only since the middle of the 19th century.
