how do you know what fret to play on by looking at the notes???
( my instructors just been writing the number of the fret so far )

Well, if you know how to read music, you just have to know how your guitar is tuned. The first string when played open is a low E note, the first fret is an F note, the second is F sharp, and the third is G.

There is a whole step (one fret) space between A and B, a half step (the fret directly after) between B and C, a whole step from C to D, whole step from D to E, a half step from E to F, a whole step from F to G and a whole step from G to A

practice practice practice.

Play slow, real slow, just one bar until you remember the position. 'Tactile memory' is what I believe its called.

Look at the music sheet and think of the sound (dont try translating the written note and then remember the position). Its easier to remember where the 'sound' is than where a note is.

Its why guitars have standard sizes.

I don't know I play by ear,don't know how to read notes
except cliffnotes.
