An easy method of converting units is to multiply by a conversion factor so that the units cancel. For example, if you remember that there are 1000 millimeters in a meter, and 10 decimeters in a meter, you can convert to meters first and then to dm:
18.4 mm * (1 m / 1000 mm) * (10 dm / 1 m)
= 18.4 * (10 dm / 1000) [the units cancel out, except for dm]
= 0.184 dm
Hope that was clear enough.

One way which helps me to calculate the metric is to remember the order of the 6 units. From km, hm, dkm, m, dm, cm, mm. Depends where you start, you just move up and down, which is the same as moving the decimal point. For example, 18.4 mm is moving up the metric scale of two places,
18.4mm will be .184 dm, .0184m, .00184dkm, .000184 hm
I hope this help.

I could tell you the answer , but you wouldn't learn anything (like for the test). The easiest way is to list the prefixes in order:
k h da base d c m
base, of course, is meters, liters, etc.
so,anyway, put you pencil on m ( since you are starting at mm), then move your pencil over to d..to do this you had to move two places to the left. So then go to your number and move the decimal two places to the left. You can use this to convert any metric dimensions.
I call this cut to the chase math.
