I'm in the same boat and just learned all this a few weeks ago. It's really easy and pretty fun, too.
All you need is a bank account and a debit/credit card.
Go to eBay and register. They will ask for your bank information (it's safe and protected), then they will practically guide you through the selling process.
If you have a digital camera or a picture phone you can take pictures of your product (email the pics from your phone, upload them onto the computer from the camera) and post them on your auction.
If you have any more questions eBay is very user-friendly and you'll probably be able to get answers directly from their site.
Good luck and happy selling!

what do you have of value??
the only way to learn is to get right to it and start. its simple enough that my 12 year old son created his own profile and started right up.
paypal is a good tool for getting paid, i wouldnt even sell something on ebay without first opening a paypal account. it takes a couple days while they verify your accounts and addresses but its the only way i like to transfer funds.
check peoples reputations which are always located near their screen names. most should be above 95% positive feedback or else dont do business with them.
your security depends on how well you understand the rules and resources provided to you by ebay and paypal.
basically, if you sell to idiots they can and will lie and say they never received anything or it was damaged etc.. and the truth is that the buyer is somewhat more protected than you are.
fortunately there are many tools in place, and you can decide how your auction is going to work. state the rules of the auction clearly and dont feel too ashamed to have these expectations, most honest people understand that you want to be a little cautious.
1. sell to confirmed buyers with positive feedback by stating these conditions as part of your auctions.
sometimes its stated something like:
"auction will be cancelled for bidders under 97% positive feedback" "paypal only"
2. ship only to confirmed addresses and mandate shipping insurance as part of the transaction.

Easy...go to the eBay website and look for their tutorial. Very easy to follow and they'll give you all the information you need to know to get started. It's simple and there's no need to buy any of those "know how" books out there. I've done very well selling on eBay in my spare time. Since I love to go to garage sales, I often resell my bargains on eBay. Yarn sells really well as do crochet and knitting patterns/books. I've made a killing on these. I even ran an ad in the paper for people with large amounts of these items in their homes. Believe it or not, all called me to come get this stuff and they gave it to me! I've yet to have to buy anything as a result of placing these ads. Good luck!

Read the information on the site. It's very clearly explained under a heading "How to sell" or something similar.

There's nothing to it. Jump in and start - just register and pretty much follow the bouncing ball.
