New York was the capital from 1789 until 1790 and George Washington was inaugurated there and then it was moved to Philadelphia from 1790 until 1800 when the District of Columbia better known as Washington D.C. (named after George Washington who referred to it as Federal city and NEVER lived there) was finally opened. The District of Columbia was mandated in the Constitution on July 16, 1790 and built between 1792 and 1800...John Adams was the first President to occupy the White House.
