'It's colder than hell outside' when isn't it realistically always colder than hell since hell is supposed to be fire and brimstone?

I never say that.
I'll say, "it'll be a cold day in Hell"..."or when Hell freezes over"...before such and such will happen or I'll do this or that.
I'm more likely to say: "It's as hot as Hell" -- although I usually say..."hot as Hades"...

Since hell is the hottest place ever, it makes since that everything is colder than hell. I really don't know the answer, I just wanted to get a few points.
