think carefully about what the benefits and drawbacks would be for telling your professor. is this a professor that personally shares his/her experiences with mental illness? make a list of the pros and cons of telling your professor. if the pros really outweigh the cons, then maybe it would be helpful. for the most part, it's probably best to keep the relationship on a professional, non-personal level, though.

No, why would you, unless you are trying to date him or something. The professor probably is on some sort of meds himself...and I think it's great you arn't ashamed, you shouldnt be and glad to here it's under control, I was on meds for years for depression and been off almost a year now, heck, seems like over half the Nation has had some sort of mental illness, which is fine, because there are meds out there, but, no, it's none of his business...or anyone elses...but, if you feel like you should, then go for it, but, he's going to think you are a nut for sure, so, I would just drop it and not say anything.

Unless you anticipate your depression interfering with your school work I would advise no as there are still foolish people who attach stigmas to mental health problems. That being said, if you do feel you may need additional help/time try your school's counseling services; if you're in college there are programs (that are bound by confidentiality laws) that can extend deadlines, bring work to you, provide accomodations, and much more. One of their duties is to notify your teachers that requests for help has been granted and also explain how their services work, including what the teacher may or may not do (to you) and how to better help you succeed.

Virtually all schools receive federal aid, so you should have no problem finding a mediator (if needed). Hope this helps.

If you think there is a good reason to tell this professor, then by all means. It's the same as divulging any illness. If it has caused you to have problems in the class for which you need to discuss this matter with the professor than I see it as relevent. Same as if you had asthma that caused problems with class. Otherwise, why would you NEED to discuss it? Depression should not have stigma attached.

what would be the point of doing so?
some professors may discrimnate...it relly depends on what you hope to accomplish..if you want to give your profesor different view of mnertal illness then go for it...I think it could be positive...
if you are simply explaining why you may have had problems in the past you can tell him it was a medical condition...

you should not feel ashamed, you also do not have to jeopardize your academic standing...

Lots of people have depression. Keep your illness to yourself or people will see that in everything you do. You want to be judged by your "un-depressed" self, right? Your problems are just that..."yours". It has nothing to do with you being ashamed or embarrassed. It has to to with human nature and their judgemental ways. Save yourself a lot of mental anguish and keep these things to yourself; or save them to share with select people who love you. Godloveya, honey!

It may just be from all the homework. Depression is pretty prevelant when all you have time for is homework. Or when you spend 7 hours in one place without talking to some one because you have a big project to do.

You only should tell your professor if you are experiencing depression to the degree where it is affecting your performance in class, or if you need special consideration because of it. Otherwise, there is no need.

Absolutely, and once you have a mental illness, you'll always have a mental illness, you just may have it under control. Depression will come back at sometime.

You don't need to tell him anything if it doesn't benefit you. If your professor needs that kind of info from you and you're not ashamed of your past, then I see no reason why you shouldn't tell him.
