probably fenugreek. i take it too. you can get it at gnc or any other vitamin shop. take 3-4 of them 3 times a day. they say to take it for about 3 days to increase your supply but i take it everyday. its not expensive. it makes you smell like syrup when you sweat or pee but that means its working. im finally getting caught up and i ve been taking it since she was 5 weeks or so. she is 11 weeks now. if i run out of fenugreek it is a must for me to get more. good luck

I don't know about any herb I would be comfortable taking while breast feeding. I think a lactation consultant is an excellent idea, but I would be wary of one that recommended herbs. Do you pump? Would he accept breast milk from a bottle? Pumping may increase your supply. How often are you nursing? Some babies will nurse every 1-2 hours. If you are supplementing with jar food, he will not be as hungry the next time you try to nurse. What did your doc recommend and what did he say about the jar food? That being said, Kudos to you for breast feeding. It is hard work and many mothers give up. Don't be so hard on yourself. Good luck and God bless.

I had the same problem. I did not take any herb or anything, but I was told to begin pumping again for a few days and sure enough, my milk supply became more. I acutally did pump a number of times the same time I nursed on the opposite side. The pumping was easier because having the baby on me made my milk drop faster. But my supply did increase after a few days of pumping regularly.

I used to drink skim, but then I read a study that skim doesn't make you lose weight and that without the fat, you can't absorb the calcium. Then I read that they add powdered milk to skim milk to make it 2% and have to clean it because it smells bad after pasteurization. Now I drink raw whole milk. It was a big change from skim at first, but it tastes incredible now. I drink less because I feel full after drinking just a little and I have had some definite health benefits (lost weight, not as many headaches, no cramps w/ period, etc, etc.) from this and other ways that I've tried to get more natural with my diet.

Cut out the "solid" food. Thats why your supply is low. Nurse as much as possible and your supply shoul;d increase naturally.
You babe needs your milk right now, the solids are just for play, and obviously, interfering with his health.

my milk supply is also low. I have started to Fenugreek from your local health store. The clinic nurse informed me that it does not affect the baby. I have noticed a gradual increase in supply as I am putting my son on to feed as often as possible. He is also underweight so I have been giving him cereal as well to fill his belly.

I do not know what herb she is referring to, but I would definitely recommend contacting your local la leche league leader. Your milk supply is low, *because* your son is not nursing very much. Maybe his solids need to be adjusted too.

Does your doctor know that you are supplementing with jar food? Usually when a person switches to jar food, they don't breast food anymore. There are two possibilities that I can see. First, your baby can't break down the jarred food and isn't getting enough nutrition from it. Second, you aren't feeding him enough of the jarred food. My suggestion would be to try some formula in a bottle. Oh, and talk to your doctor if you haven't already, about the jar food thing.
