a woman at the zoo said to a clown that we're having a problem with WB's at this moment.she said:16and 2/3% WB'sof the zoo's 150 WB's had become infected with fleas, ticks or both. last week she sent her 2 assistants Orly and Willy to count the # of WB's w/ fleas and the number of ticks, & the # of both ticks & fleas. they didn't follow her directions and determined only that 20 WB's have fleas, and 14 WB's have ticks. The woman said she would have to re-examine all 150 WB's to determine how many have only fleas, how many have only ticks, and how many have both fleas & ticks.

please help the clown impress the woman by determing the number of infected WB's in each catagory.

please if you can, show all your work.

thank you

okay, first off you know 16.667% of 150 are infected. so that tells you that 25 are infected.

of those 25, 20 have fleas, and 14 have ticks. (given)
F=Number with just fleas
T=Number with Just ticks
B=Number with Ticks and Fleas

25=F+T+B
F+B=20
T+B=14

solve for B

25=(20-B)+(14-B)+B
25=34-B
-B=-7
B=7

substitute and solve
F+7=20
F=13

T+7=14
T=7

so, you have 13 with Fleas only, 7 with Ticks only, and 7 with both fleas and ticks.

.166666*150=25 infected wombats. Since 20 have fleas and 14 have ticks and 20+14=34...9 of the wombats must have ticks and fleas so that a total of 25 have at least one of them.
