I just got a new 20 gallon aquarium and I want to know if i need to run the power filter all day

Yes. All the time. If they have a provision for being turned down, do that at feeding time, then turn back up 3-5 minutes later.

I turn all my filters and air pumps off in the morning and at night when I feed, but only for about an hour at a time.

Please leave the filter running. The only time that you should turn the filter off is when you are cleaning the tank or changing the media in your filter.

it does need to run 24/7 if the filter would to be turned off for an extended period of time the oxygen level would be the first to drop and most fish would die unless you have labyrinth fish ( betta .. ect)

definetley. the only thing which should be on a timer is your light and possibly a co2 injector.

Yes, sure do. That should be on 24/7. Well, except for when you do your weekly water changes that is.

yes, they start to grow bacteria in them that turn ammoina and nitrites into nitrates. if you turn it off the bacteria will die off.
