If they are the regular strawberry plants, not ever-bearing, you should pick all the blossoms of the first year. If they are ever-bearing, pick all blossoms off in the spring and you will get a good crop in the fall. After that no more picking off blossoms, but in regular you should cut the runners off in the fall.

All the blossoms should be pinched off the first time they blossom. This promotes growth of runners and stronger plants. DO NOT cut off the runners. This is how they replant themselves and reproduce more plants. Unless you only want 4 plants.

You can plant the whole strawberry. However, I would plant more than one. The new plants will have to have their seeds germinated by other strawberry plants and you run the best chances of that by planting more than one.
