There continues to be a lot of studies on this very question. There has not been any definite answer, but some research shows that they are born this way.
They have actually interviewed people and have an inventory to see if someone registers as a sociopath. They are then able to go back and examine their childhood and life. Often they find that from infancy they do not have any empathy or compassion.
How they are raised don't necessary cause them to be sociopath. How they are raised and treated can lead them to other deviant behaviors or to be a serial killer, but not necessarily a "sociopath."

First a sociopath is someone who has no empathy or concern for other human beings and animals. There are cases of sociopath's being sexually molested by their mother and they instead of killing their mother killed women who look like her. On the other hand Ted Bundy said he was never mistreated. I know a lot of people who were abused and did not become sociopath's.

Sometimes they are just born that way, with no ability to feel any regard for others. There doesn't have to be any "major upset" because plenty of people have things happen that are very, very bad, and they don't go around hurting others. That's just an excuse they use to further manipulate others.

It could be many things...having a traumatic childhood, or having a major bad event in your life that affected you mentally. It could stem from a variety of reasons or they could have a mental disorder that they were born with which is genetic. It could be something missing in the brain that causes it to not function properly. I don't think it's any one thing.

i don't know. but my sister just threw a fit. we were soppose to take our kids go out to a friends house for easter sunday. she went off on us because my husband was taking too long getting ready. so she went without us and spoiled my mood.
her fit reminded me of a sociopath.

when you grow up feeling that noone has nurtured you or looked out for you or encouraged you that anger and hurt builds up until your mind just switches off to others and pain
anything you do or say is to cause mischief and pain
your inner child is on a rampage

most are born that way
socipaths have no conscience, they've never felt guilt to know how it feels- they intellectually know what it is.
there is some defect when someone has never been able to feel guilty
