I am not from India and over the past year I started to have an interest in Candi and what he said. I had not even seen the movie until last year sadly it was impossible to even find the movie locally to rent but as luck would have it months later it came on television.
People look for spiritual enlightenment at a certain in their lives, we search it out. I think people have to mature and be ready to listen to what he had to teach.
There is another saying "the teacher will appear when the student is ready". The fact that people you know mock him or others mock him only shows their ignorance not Gandhi's importance in society and the messages he tried to pass on. Even in his day Gandhi was fear, ridiculed, hated and disliked, but that hatred was the other people's "stuff" not anything Gandhi with what message Gandhi was trying to convey. Sadly being assassinated only proves how blind and ignorant people can be. He did nothing wrong but because he spoke truth and justice and made people listen people felt he had to be stopped.
But so many "great voices" were silenced because an ignorant person was afraid of this person's teachings and inspirational effect they had on people...

Gandhi was great one reason...... he was able to inspire millions...
True he did a lot of good to the country.
But there is an argument that because we did not obtain our freedom by fighting for it we do not know its value.
Freedom was donated to us by the Britishers.
Gandhi magnanimously donated the Congress Party and the seat of Prime Ministership to Nehru, when he quite well believed that the Congress Party should be scrapped and new political parties should evolve.
His methodology was in one way a reason for the present state of India. [Get to think of those who go without a square meal ......... while politicians just keep robbing this country]
Would a war have given us freedom a lot earlier?
Would it have given us freedom which we have earned?
Leave alone Gandhi.............
Our society is degrading to such a state ... that
we don't respect elders
we don't respect teachers....
we pity those who genuinely try doing something good.
all because of
the Hi culture ..... replacing the Namaste culture...
How will some one else respect us when we do not know how to respect us...........

Mahatma Gandhi is still remembered by all in India. We are still taught about his contribution to the freedom movement. Most people still take his name with respect. Of course there are a few who do not fully understand the hard work, put in, for the freedom that they currently enjoy.
But have you considered the thousands of other freedom fighters, who have made their contribution without even a mere mention in history. It's these unknown people that we should be thank full for.

Mahatma Gandhi was and is an inspiration to everyone in the world that want change and improvement of their goals. He taught everyone you don't need a gun, anger or killing to make change. I am an American and can appreciate what he did for India. Although I think he would be disappointed by people from India flocking to the U.S. for $$$. Everyone in India should be proud of their own country and help their country to improve not take jobs away from Americans.

I share your views totally. Indians do not deserve Mahatma Gandhi. Remember the words of Einstein about Gandhi- ' Generations to come will scarce believe that such a person lived on this earth'. His life is incredible. A saint among politicians. His saintliness remains in stark contrast to the wretched politicians we have to-day. Thank God, he died soon after Independence.

People do remember Gandhi ji.
He will live long in the hearts of genarations to come.
Your point is true but partially only.
He is remembered by many and those incidents which u mentioned bout bar and stuff are done by cheap people to get some attention.
We should forgive them. Gandhi ji has taught us the lesson of truth and non voilence. We should know and follow the truth and forgive the wrond doers as to follow non voilence.
Congratulations for your question. Its such a nice feeling to see so many followers of Gandhi ji...

I think people forget many prominent figures, past and present, but I don't think it's bad. There will always be cruel and ignorant people in this world that will poke fun of other people. At best, all we can do is ignore them and move on. If you're truly interested in honoring the dead, take action and inform others, especially children. Given the proper education, children can at least appreciate past history of all cultures and religions, and they won't be so ignorant when they grow up.
I disagree with crossingover's comment. Indian's don't take a way jobs from Americans. Americans take away jobs from other Americans for the sake of efficiency and profitability. In fact, ignore what I said about Americans taking away jobs from other Americans. It just makes business sense to hire the most knowledgeable employees with the least amount of money. At the same time, I don't think all jobs are going overseas. That is extremely exaggerated as some jobs are in fact coming back to the US. Most Indians do come to America to make a better life, as with anybody who comes from a country with limited opportunity. But, these people also send money back to home to help their own people. If so called Americans don't like this, step up to plate, and further your education. Nothing is easy in life and without challenges, life would not be fun.

Gandhi is remembered by those whom he saved and continues to save. That is good. But we should not force people whose forefathers were not saved by Gandhi to remember Gandhi.
In any case, after 3/4 generations people do not rembers their ancestors. Why expect them to remeber a person whom they have never known.
What is the need for rembering Gandhi now? We see what the people who rembers him do. Isn't that enough a punishment.
And if no one listens to you, then Ekla Cholo Re. India is a kingdom of Kota system.Which class/ caste did Gandhi belong to. Based on that we can seek reservation of remembering great men of the past.

It is all Game of the DIVINE and not by an individual man or men. He chose Mahatma Gandhi and got the work done for you and me and that is the Truth. So appeal to the people of India to be grateful to the Almight for HIS GRACE.

this is why even the Bible warns that by the third generation the people would begin to "fall away."
Gandhi is becoming a mere legend, a fairytale of sorts in the eyes of the new generations. If you don't want him forgotten, then tell your children to tell their children and so on and so on.
That being said, I am American and take heart because even I know who he is and what a great man he was in so many ways.
