It's a way of slow release watering your plant - take the lid off a plastic bottle or put holes in it, cut off the bottom and place near plant, fill with water. The water will go directly to the roots which will only take it up when needed.

You never said what zone you are in - around here gallon jugs are used for 2 things. In the spring - they are a heat sink for starting plants out early. they collect heat from the sun and slowly release it at night - keeping the plats warmer that the outside air so that they can be set out earlier. They can also be used for "zone" watering and fertilizing. If you want to put a special type of liquid fertilizer on certain plants - you can easily do that with this method - but just plain water can also be used for slow and deep watering plants. - It's a personal choice.

If you live in the south of UK the bottles are probably there tp water plants during a hosepipe ban.

I think it is to scare off cats but I use one with a pointed waterer attached to it by my apple tree to water the roots . it didn't scare off next doors cat as it sat happily next to it watching the bubbles as the water released into the earth, so I don't think that works lol

It's to keep cats from digging and poohing in the garden. It's works for my dad and in my garden but not my mate.

I've heard it's there so dogs won't urinate there. Also if they were upside down into the ground, there would be a spike in the opening so the water would go into the ground.

they can be used as mini greenhouse top start plants off in the soil.

If they contain water it will be mainly for a slow release of watering the plants.

Especially useful if you are subject to any water bans in your area
