The potential for stem cell research is bountiful. With the ability to differentiate into numerous cell lineages, stem cells offer hope for the treatment and diagnosis of many diseases but what are the issues (other than religious) against it?

First, it is CRITICAL to distinguish between Embryonic stem cells, Umbilical cord stem cells and Adult stem cells. ONLY Embryonic stem cells generate ethical questions. The basis for opposing Embryonic stem cell research is that the cells can't be obtained without killing the unborn child. Belief that the unborn child is a living human being is not exclusively a religious belief. One little know fact about stem cell research is that ALL promising research to date has involved ADULT stem cells. Embryonic stem cells have actually cause more medical problems than they have solved.

I believe it is a spiritual issue, and therefore can come under the banner of a religious issue. I am not particularly religious, but when you consider religion of any description is meant to help with our spiritual health it does. Stem cell research is about using embroyos and this is where the issue begins...an embroyo is in fact a baby to many people. I know a lot argue that because it is not a fetus yet that it is not, but a lot see it that way. If you are using a "baby" to in effect grow parts of bodies, doesn't that make it a spiritual issue? I don't have a problem per say with stem cell research but I do think they need tough restrictions on it. And cloning to me is just not a thing that should be done, because that being then does not have a soul, a spirit. The debate as you put it, needs to be about spirituality first, and once this debate is resolved, then the next needs to be formed. But people have to feel ok about what is being put out there. Just because, for instance you are ok with it, doesn't mean everyone else should follow suit. The beauty of humanity is that we are each different and have our own opinions.

Fanatical evangelicals think stem cell research is the same thing as abortion.

That's it. Just religion. And I don't remember any bible stories talking about petrie dishes with egg and sperm cells in them. It's ridiculous that people would hinder such an amzing breakthrough in medical science because of their personal interpretation of what they think is right. Those people are obviously not very educated.

It gives republicans something to crow about, not to mention getting churches votes

Hell abortion is all over the place. What do they do with the little buggers? Why not use them for research
