The powerstroke engine in the econoline and f-series are equipped with a cat. From 94.5 to 97, both 50 state and California. As an international tech. cats have not been installed on the international t444e unit, and were released in 2001 on the vt365, or commonly known as the 2003-07 6.0l powerstroke, and 04 to current dt466. The point of the converter is to lower nox emission. Many truck owners have removed the cat with good sucsess, as for the econoline model Im not sure of any down pipes that fit, I havent researched that application. The purpose of the exhaust backpressure sensor is to aid in operation of the exhaust backpressure valve which blocks exhaust flow to provide faster cab heating. Removing the cat poses no real issue of the engine light illuminating since the only purpose of the sensor is to operate the ebp valve when engine coolant temp and ambient temps are low. The only time the engine light may illuminate is if an ebp performance test is performed, I found this to be true on my 2000. That never had a cat, but the large diameter exhaust has effect.

Ford Diesel Catalytic Converter

diesels do not use a catalytic converter. these engines produce particulate matter as exhaust as waste. this would plug a catalyst quickly. what you are seeing underneath the vehicle is probably a resinator, used to reduce the noise in the exhaust.
i would not recommend removing that, a powerstroke is load enough as it is

MDK is more or less right. Your truck does not have a cat. Catalysts have only been introduced for Diesels made for the 2007 model year.

If you did have a cat, replacing it with a straight pipe would not be a good idea.

Yes, it has a catalytic converter. Yes a straight piece can be installed in it's place, but you will be breaking an emissions law and the fine is more than it's replacement! Shop, shop, shop, for it's replacement if it is needed. Don't have it replaced by the dealer if it is truly needed.

the loss of backpressure bye removing that cat will set a code and turn the check engine light on.
