My 4-year old keeps getting in my aquarium. I have no where to put it up higher. He opens the lid and takes out ornamental log so that he can find the african drawf frog. He has grabbed his leg & got him/her out on more than one occasion. HELP!!

I have tried spanking, time out , turning off the cartoons & the importance of not killing the fish & frog. I've even researched the web & read important info about the adfs. I will try the screen cover. THANKS!!!

A canopy really would be your best bet. You could find plenty of child proof items to attach to it. The child proof locks that you have to open the lid slightly, then push down on a tab for it to release. It works great. You can find them in the baby section of big chain stores. You might be able to use this with just a plastic hood. Just make sure the screws can't get wet or are the type that won't rust. The piece I'm thinking of is one commonly used on cabinets to keep children out. You might have to get creative! I'll think about it some more and send a schematic.

A less attractive option would be to use a strap and wrap it around. That could be locked a number of different ways. Or, if possible, put the aquarium in a room that has a locked door, or buy a new doorknob. That way, you can limit access to the aquarium and your son can play/watch when you are supervising.

There are critter cage tops- look in the reptile isle. They are wire mesh on top (ok for lights on there as well) and have plastic screws on the sides that can be tightened, so basically it is like a vice grip. Until he figures out how to untwist those, it should work.

You can also buy aquariums (once again in the reptile isle) with built in locks on the side- the top will not open if there is something holding the top and bottom together

There's a reptile tank availble by All-Glass Aquarium that has a lockable sliding screen top. A 10 gallon runs about $30 (larger sizes are also availble). You might find one at a local pet store, or you could have them order one: http://www.lowergroundreptiles.net/supplies/supp-ct.html - see the 4th product down in the photos

Theres not a lot you can do apart from sellotape around the edges, but then that becomes a bug bear everytime you want to do things in their.
The best thing to do is everytime he/she keeps doing whatever to the tank and you see them, is to get their favourite item or book or cartoon, whatever it is and take it away from them for a bit.
Then explain that they are delicate creatures in the tank and get frightened easily and can die.
If that does'nt work sell it then explain to them why

I wouldn't worry so much about the aquarium as teaching your child some discipline. It sounds like he needs a firm hand to his bottom as few times.

I have to be honest, I don't think you need a way to secure the tank. I think once he understand he shouldn't under any conditions open the tank, maybe a bit harsher discipline would be in order for him before he gets in the habit of hurting innocent animals.
