Early decision allows a person to apply to a single program with the understanding that, if accepted, he/she would enroll for the term applied.

For instance, if University A was your top choice, you would apply to University A with early decision option. You would not be able to apply Early Decision to any other schools. If University A accepted you, you would HAVE to enroll.

This option gives the students a chance to get the college application process over with early, and colleges a chance to nail down their top applicants as well. Early decisions are usually made in the November-January time frame, while regular decisions are often delayed until April-May area.

However, early decision is sometimes plagued with problems, and many schools have now abandoned early decision in favor of a regular-decision only.

It is just like the normal process -- except they decide early.

Actually, thre is one other difference. If you apply for early decision, and they accept you -- then you have to commit to going there.
