Hey.
I got this from a website where people can ask scientists questions. The question was, "Is it true that fish do not sleep?" Here's the scientist's answer:
Most all fish spend time in an energy-saving state that can be called "rest", and we might even call their behavior "sleep", though it is probably different than "sleep" in most land animals. Many fish, like Bass and perch, rest on or under logs at night. Coral reef fish active in the day, hide and rest in crevices and cracks in the reef to avoid being eaten at night.
The resting behavior of fish is very different from their behavior the rest of the day. Many minnows, for example, which are very active in schools during the day, scatter and remain motionless in shallow water at night. Many fish "rest" or "sleep" during the day and are
active at night instead, but almost all fish sleep.
There are some animals that never stop swimming, like many species of shark, however, they HAVE to keep moving to push water through their mouths in order to breathe, and they may still sleep while moving,
we just don't know yet.
Fish can sleep. Even though it doesn't seem like it. Its just they leave their eyes open so they can keep a look out.

Yes fish sleep. They don't have eyelids like people though. Thats why it's important that your lights get turned out at night. Don't think you can exactly say when it is sleeping or just hanging out in a specific spot.

yes i belive they do sleep
but with there eyes open
you catch them sleeping not so often but you can catch a pleco sleeping 84% of the day.Go to your tank like about 11pm and if you make one little sound you find that your fish are swimming.so they wake up very easily and like about 6:00 in the morning. If you want to see them sleeping go very very quiet and make sure not to turn on the light and you see them resting on a plant or something.except the pleco which is mostly awake in the night time.

Some do and some don't actually. Even the ones that sleep don't sleep like we do, it's more like a short little light nap so that they can wake up on a seconds notice to escape predators. It would be hard for you to tell they are sleeping if not completely impossible.

The sleep with their eyes open (no eyelids!) I can always tell in the morning when I go turn on the lights they're asleep.
The smaller ones are just drifting at the top, not swimming. My cichlids are literally in their cubby holes drifting and bumping softly against their cave walls. They look like they're dead..haha..but they aren't lying on the ground or upside down. Just very dazed looking!

Yes, the do sleep but they don't have eyelids so they obviously can't close their eyes. :) They might be laying really still on the bottom of your tank or at the top. either or.

Not as far as i know, they have'nt got any eyelids so it causes a problem.
They just rest really,
I don't know whether you know this but a shark has to keep moving otherwise it will drown..
( what that's got to do with fish sleeping i don't know , still never mind). Ta ta

Yes, you'll know because their usually close the bottom and close to the corner of the tank and they don't really move much.
