I plan to custom make velcro window shades that will block the windows completely in the back and side windows since I may want to occasionally camp out in the van. Is it illegal to drive with them completely covered up? I can still see behind with the side mirrors. What about just the sides or just the back window? What about both? What about if the vehicle is parked and turned off? I may also install a curtain rod just behind the front seats to block the windshield and side windows in the front. Any suggestions welcome. I'm in Tennessee. Thanks.

I don't know Tennessee law, but I'll make a few guesses. While the van is parked and not running, I doubt there will be a problem. I have seen CARGO vans that don't even have rear windows and have no side windows behind the driver and front passenger doors. These usually have extra / larger side view mirrors. I don't know if that type of mirror would allow blocked windows on a passenger van. Try asking the local police. As long as the understand why you are asking, they should be glad to help you understand the law.

It is illegal, the police cant see you.

There are window tint laws to prevent the windows from being to dark. I am sure the same law would apply to this.

You may be able to get away with having the rear glass covered but to get around it you will need a back up camera and monitor in the van

Yes it is, they have to be manufactured from original place like Ford, GM, and so forth only at certain % of tint. Only back side and back windows are allowed to be tinted. The reason is for the safety of the law enforcement officers. They have to be able to see in to the car.
