Help me out here I feel like I am alone in my understanding of greatest. To me if you are going to list the greatest of anything...songs, movies, bands, singers, etc there needs to be a way to judge. Not that mine is right but shouldn't it be a combination of talent, importance, and influence? It bothers me when someone lists as best bands ever groups with one album out and formed in 2003. I can understand "favorite" I love the group Air Supply they are one of my favs but I would never list them as a "great" group. So tell me your opinions please. If you are listing best bands or movies ever you need to list a criteria not just cause it was cool when you heard them on the radio or just came out of the theater.

2) The Yardbirds- not necessarily the best music but they were very important because they raised such greats as Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck and Eric Clapton!
3) Nirvana- music of a generation, kurt kobain being many people's idol!
4)Led Zeppelin- pure genius! quality music..so many great songs, not just one hit wonders!

The Henchmen were a local band with mexicans and white guys playing R & B back in the late 60's. The Malibu's were before them and played good ol' popular R & R. The Banana Flavord Sludge Pump was years before their time in the early 70's. Shanti lasted a decade through the 90's playing mostly originals and still exists. EZ Options is a mostly original band that has played a couple years as of 2007. These are all local Front Range Colorado Bands. Watch for Born in the Flood to become a big success and go see them if you can. If you're not there you miss out on what the music is really all about. It's not recordings, It's live in the moment.

Before I answer this let me say I am a fan of rock.

Now I decided to judge based on influence over the music genre as a whole over the last 30 years.

1. Alice Cooper - As far as I'm concerned I think Alice Cooper is the father of modern metal, rock and shock rock. Without him you wouldn't have many of the super popular groups like slipknot or Lordi (winner of the 2006 eurovision) running around today in outlandish costumes.

2. Iron Maiden - These guys really changed metal as far as I'm concerned with epic ballads based on history and ancient literature. Who would ever imagine you could listen to metal and learn about the rime of the ancient mariner?

3. Black Sabbath - Really brought the occult into the metal genre with constant riffing and dark themed songs that paved the way for many genres that have since come into existence.

4. Rage Against the Machine - Rage brought politics to the MTV generation. I think its still hard to listen to a rage song without wanting to get up and do something about world issues.

5. KISS - Proved that a good stage show and dressing cool can really help sell records even if most of your songs are filler. When bands today like mushroomhead, gwar, slipknot or lordi go back and forth about stealing the mask idea from each other it all goes back to stealing from kiss. (and they were wearing corpse paint way before emperor and mayhem, haha)

anyway, thats my opinion, and its really hard to pick only 5 when you think about all the influential bands like mayhem, death, metallica, megadeth and many others.

Fall Out Boy- because their music doesn't fit into any real category besides "Fall Out Boy" they're VERY original and not a poser band like some we see today.

Panic! At The Disco- because they've worked so hard, and because of that, they're now a major name in music, with only ONE record out.

Evanescence- because they're from Arkansas, and nothing good usually comes out of Arkansas (I'm from there), Amy Lee (lead vocals) has the BEST female voice in music, and it gives me courage to try music in Arkansas, knowing how far they've come.

30 Seconds To Mars- because Jerod Leto(lead vocals) can control this band, and handle acting, and does a very good job at it.

Rise Against- I only really like about 3 of their songs, but they write songs according to things happening int today's society, and their videos reflect their opinions on all of the wrongs in the world today.
