There is no toll to walk over the bridge - only to drive. There are restrictions on the time of day and what side you can walk on.

First place, yes, you can get to the bridge along the Bay Trail. The other thing to remember is that San Francisco is a pretty small city, in size. It is only about seven miles across and seven miles deep. So, if you pick the right route, you really don't need to walk more than ten or twelve miles to cross the entire city. But, you also have to keep in mind that some routes are not all that straight, and, if you pick a straight line route, you'll have to traverse some pretty tall hills. The Bay Trail is NOT a straight line, by any means. If you ever try this again, I suggest you get an inexpensive city map at a gas station and mark your progress as you pass landmarks. That way, you'll know where you've been and how far you have to go. By the way, once you've reached the GG Bridge, you still have to cross it, and that's a pretty big bridge. AND you'll have to make the return trip.

There isn't any toll on the Golden Gate Bridge. It can get chilly walking across due to the winds, so bring a light jacket or sweater.
