Fearless conversation is based on a number of things. First, you have to have confidence. If you are scared or uptight during a conversation, the other person is bound to know. Second, a good start helps. Maybe a question, maybe a fact, something like that. If you do good for the first minute or so, that will probably be the impression that the other person will have.

Step one: You're taking it. Get information. Way to go.
Two: It's helpful to think most about the person you're talking to. Try not to imagine about what they're thinking about you, which is the source of most fear. Focus outward as much as possible. Think about how you can make this a good conversation for them, more than for you.
Three: Think about substance. What question(s) could you ask which might get them talking about themselves. eg. "What do you like to do when you're not working?" "Who are some of your favourite people to spend time with?" "Where did you grow up?" "What did you like most about growing up?"
Avoid questions that may just produce a "yes" or "no". Ask open-ended questions like "What did you think about that?"
Four: As much as possible get eye contact and look at the face. Usually people give a volume of information away when they talk about something. You might make a comment, "You seem pretty happy about that!" "You seem a little uncertain about that..." It keep things going and gets past the surface if people want to go there.
Five: When nothing is working, end the conversation graciously. "Thanks for talking. See you later." Don't blame yourself for a poor conversation. You may click better with different people as might they. Or, some people really just are very difficult to talk to for more than 30 seconds.
Six: Evaluate a good conversation -- what did you enjoy? What made it work. If you're willing to learn, you'll just get better, even if you're an introvert by nature (like I am).
