I know that they are checking the babys anatomy. I was wondering what to expect. Did everyone else video tape it??

As the other answerer said, they are checking for major defects such as Downs Syndrome, missing limbs, hair-lip etc... And checking all the major organs are in place and working - lungs, heart, liver etc...

The amazing thing is that they can usually tell you your baby's sex, and let you know that s/he is healthy.

I wasn't allowed to videotape mine :-( - but I live in Spain, so they may let you do it wherever you are... I wish I had been able to! You could see all of my baby girl's movements, and even notice where her eyes are - it was incredible!

Expect to be surprised and very emotional - it made me cry with happiness to see my baby!

I'm due with my little girl end of April / beginning of May.

Good luck - you'll love it!! :-)

The reason for the scan is to make sure the baby if growing appropriately. They make sure there is not too little or too much amniotoc fluid. They look to make sure the baby's spine is all intact, to rule out spinabifida. They look to make sure there is no fluid on the brain, hydrocephilis, they look to make sure the heart has no defects, they check if the baby has a cleft lip,etc... There are 100's of defects they can rule out by looking at a 20 week sonogram. Unfortunately there are 1000's of defects so they cant catch all of them, but the major ones are ruled out.
