More commonly referred to as Mer-folk, Undines specifically. Undines are the humanoid form of water-folk. Mermaids are semi-mature Mer-Folk, completely Mature they become Male and upon death they revert to sea foam.
Sea-Elves? maybe in a self-styled New-Age religion.
There are descriptions of Undines small enough to be confused for an Elf, but they are either Demons, Dwarves, Pixies, Sprites, or Fairies.
Most Undines are NOT friendly, and of a very different temperament than humans. Most Undines enjoy drowning humans and causing other Maritime havoc.
Since they are spiritual creatures, and not necessarily of this world, little or no proof of their existence is left behind when the 'die'.
This is a faith based argument, as no god or spiritual entity has ever been held to scientific scrutiny.
Keep in mind that Spiritualists can also explain Physical phenomenon, whereas Science can barely describe Spiritualism.

Manatees and sea cows were once referred to as mermaids. Other than these beautiful creatures, I do not believe that mermaids and mermen exist. The only sea elfs I've ever heard of were the sea monkeys... I invested in some of those off the back of a comic book in 1973... what a gross disappointment; they were shrimp!!!
I don't believe in sea elfs OR sea monkeys, either.

Yes, they do and they hang out on weekends at the Tradewinds Saloon near La Jolla. Nothing worse than a drunken sea-elf. If they're not trying to sleep with you, they're trying to start a fight. Mermen are almost as bad, if I hear that same joke one more time, "Arrr! I don't know but it's driving me nuts!" I think I'll scream. And the mermaids, you can't dance with them, and they smell all fishy anyways.

If a Mermaid strengthen into washed up on any shore everywhere in the international, then have faith me, it may be international information and on each television and know-how paper and not in common terms on the internet, there are various of faux photos on the internet, its truly uncomplicated to faux photos now, even once I get photos despatched to me on the internet in e mail showing moments and activities, there is not any way you may tell in the event that they're actual, yet that Mermaid photograph of a lifeless one is faux.

Literally "Virgin of the Sea," the mermaid was an image of fish-tailed Aphrodite, the medieval Minne, Mari, mereminne, et cetera. Her death-goddess aspect, sometimes named Ran, received the souls of those put to sea in funeral boats; or she might trap living men in her fish net. Teutons said drowned men went to dwell in the house of Ran.

Kind of doubtful, but considering that more of space has been explored than our own oceans. Who knows? Less than 2% of our deep seas and ocean have been explored.Anything could be down there.

they don't... they were just old fishermen's tales...
mostly people before who go on fishing get lost and run out of food supply... and basically... they start to hallucinate... and other thing too is that most fishermen before mistake the silhouette of the sea-cows as ladies w/ fins swimming in the water... thus the old tales were created...
and i'm sure... a lot of us would wish that they were real...
