In the old days, it was public knowledge. He would like to have kept it a secret, but a friend of his discovered a new, unknown mineral specimen that he thought was a meteor. So he put it in a carrying case (a lead box) and brought it to a mineral show where Superman was supposed to appear as a special guest. He showed it to Superman in front of everybody and he collapsed in pain. Now everybody knew there was something that could hurt Superman, and that lead would block it. He was so ashamed he fled, but Superman realized he meant no harm and forgave him. But, this was back in the days when you could look out your window in Metropolis and see—and recognize!!—a Kryptonite meteor landing almost every other day!
After the DC reboot in 1988, there was only a little Kryptonite on Earth. The villain Metallo was powered by it, and that’s when Superman first found something that could hurt him.
After Metallo was defeated the first time, he was somehow shipped to Lexcorp instead of Star Labs. Studying the tapes, Luthor realized that something about Metallo caused Superman pain and decided it must be the radioactive stone that powered Metallo. Luthor had a ring made out of the K, to keep Superman away. (It gave Luthor cancer later, so that didn’t turn out to be such a good idea, but that’s another long story.)
So in the current continuity, only a few people are aware that Kryptonite exists, that it hurts Superman and only a few people know where to get it. Superman has entrusted Batman with a piece, because he wants someone to be able to stop him in case he ever goes bad. Apparently, only Luthor (plus anybody he has told) knows that Kryptonite exists, but you can’t get it any more.

Mostly everyone knows his weakness to kryptonite. That's easy. The hard part is getting it. Unless, you're one of his villains. They don't seem to have any problem finding it. In fact, they seem to have an abundance of it. Plus, one of his main villains is called, The Kryptonite Man and another is Metallo, the man with the kryptonite heart. Now, what a lot of people don't realize is that there are several different types of kryptonite:
red= various effects over a 48hr. period
blue= is lethal to Bizarro, like green is to Superman
green= lethal to Superman
gold= permanent loss of super powers

In truth there is really only one, and that is Lex Luthor,
But as DC comics have evolved through time, there was the character that killed Super man which is a collectors item.
I forget the name of the book but the guy was huge, green, and looked like supermans worst nightmare. not many know his secret and if they did, the comic would'nt go far because all would have access to killing him over and over again.
What thrill is that? it would be like wearing garlic to ward of dracula because you know he hate its smell.
superman never came back after death but he was cloned by using his DNA creating four or was it five super heroes of him with different talents. one even had a large hammer like that of thor and not all could fly. the youngest one wore boxing gloves, how strange.
