There are companies that are gold plating state quarters for collectors. In my opinion they are worthless since they are not original coins. The plating is worth next to nothing.

For a state quarter to have any value (other than 25¢) it would have to be a proof or uncirculated coin and these would not be in circulation.

From the beginning of the state quarter program private companies have gold plated them ( very little gold due to very thin plating) as well as painting them. There are ads for such coins in Numismatic News as well as some of the other coin magazines. Someone must have spent it because they needed a quarter or a child took it from mom or dads collection. They look nice, but the collector community considers plating and color as damage to the coin. They are just nice keepsakes to pass along in the family.
