I'm heading off to college soon and Vaio laptops caught my eye. However, I got confused when it came to choosing a processor because a Celeron M Processor 440 (1.86GHz) cost $180 less than a Intel Core 2 Duo Processor T5600 (1.83GHz). Don't they have basically the same speed? What makes the Core 2 Duo so much better?

Core 2 duo means that it actually has 2 processing chips( in your case, both clocked at 1.83) so you multiply that by 2 and your actually speed is around 3.66 under normal circumstances. While the Celeron M is just single core, while the M standing for mobile (usually already equipped with a wireless card).

A celeron M Processor is basically, a single-core centrino-based Intel Processor, a Dual-Core, as it's name implies, has two processor (or core) on a single chip. The Core 2 Duo has an edge over the Celeron-M as it has double the processing speed the latter has (each core contains 1.83 GHz in the case of the T5600).

The Celeron is Intel's low end processor, essentially those that don't bin out at higher speeds.

The Core 2 Duo is just that: 2 core processors working in parallel, usually with more cache.

If performance isn't much of an issue, the Celeron should suffice.

Celeron M is a low-powered version of Celeron, the low-end CPU (where as Pentium, and now, Core, is the mainstream stuff). Core 2 Duo is a dual-processor CPU so the low clockspeed is somewhat deceiving. It's a MUCH better CPU than the other.

The Core 2 Duo is based on a newer architecture so it accomplishes more work per clock cycle, plus it has more cache which further increases performance, plus it has two processing cores whereas the Celeron M only has one.

they the two have 2 cores however the middle 2 Duo's have a various center layout making them swifter than their predecessors and so as that they have got a miles better FSB velocity additionally the middle Duo sequence lacks 64bit help besides as different advantageous properties the money sizes are additionally diverse

well when you go for a core 2 duo you get two internal processors. . . . .thus its faster. . . . .i have a core 2 duo and i've compared it with my friend's celeron . . . .i'd ask you to go for it . . .. . .(the core2 duo that is)
