Some time ago, if you were an engineer, you were ok in the market. You knew what was neccesary for the time, and comparatively, you were well trained in a field.
Then, MBA and other Masters began to appear (in the sense that common engineers, not linked to academic research, got it), and today, in large business/enterprises, you have to got one in order aspire to be in a good level of competences and knowledge. But still that began some time ago.
What`s today`s tendency in large companies? (what do you see today for example in those companies in Europe, or USA) Is it going to be necessary to have a Ph. D? Or is it a degree of knowledge only useful when you do activities heavy linked with research?

A PhD is not for everyone. In fact -- it is not for most people.

You should not get a PhD unless you are interested in research -- whether it is academic research or research in industry.

There is always a place for Ph.D. holders, but the overwhelming majority of engineers do fine with a BS degree only. I've been an engineer for over 30 years, and it has always been that way, and still is today.

Another thing -- the act of getting a Ph.D. isn't what makes a person smart, or even necessarily knowledgeable. People who are smart and enjoy delving into things deeply and at a theoretical level enjoy getting a Ph.D. But the Ph.D. is just like a union card saying "I did it". Smart people can make just as good a contribution without a Ph.D., and people who aren't smart probably won't be very successful or make a greater contribution even if they do have a Ph.D.
