Victoria is a state of the Australian federation and is in the eastern corner of the south coast, across Bass Strait from the island state of Tasmania. It is the smallest mainland state but it is larger than many European countries and larger than most US states. Because of its favorable temperate climate it has the second largest population in Australia. The capital city is Melbourne, other large cities and towns include Ballarat, Shepparton, Bairnsdale, Wodonga, Bendigo, Warnambool and Geelong. The northern border with New South Wales mostly runs along the Murray River.
