A graphic novel is a type of comic book, usually with a lengthy and complex storyline similar to those of novels, and often aimed at mature audiences. The term also encompasses comic short story anthologies, and in some cases bound collections of previously published comic-book series.

A graphic novel is like a comic book, but has more content than a comic book. More pages, more pictures, better art (my opinion) and many more words. (Hence 'Graphic' 'Novel')
graph·ic
1. giving a clear and effective picture; vivid
2. of, pertaining to, or expressed by writing:
3. written, inscribed, or drawn.
4. depicted in a realistic or vivid manner:
5. of or pertaining to the graphic arts; a product of the graphic arts, as a drawing or print.
nov·el
1. a fictitious prose narrative of considerable length and complexity, portraying characters and usually presenting a sequential organization of action and scenes.
In essence, a graphic novel is a novel told using pictures, sounds and actions (on paper) having lots of dialog

All a graphic novel means is it's either a collection of idividual comic books with a central theme that have been combined into a single volume, or it is a very long comic that may not have been previously published in other mediums, such as in manga magazines or as individual comics.
And yes, they are comics or cartoons. Some people try to give them another name to try and distance themselves from reading old Hulk or Superman comic books, or try to distance themselves from cartoons such as Bugs Bunny or Scooby-Doo. Many Japanese comic books have very long storylines, something that wasn't common in American comic books until maybe 15 years ago, or was previously only common in the comics section of daily newpapers. They are what they are, but as many of us have become unwilling to give up so easily on comic books and cartoons from when we were kids, the comic and cartoon industry have decided to simply give us more mature comics and cartoons.

Essentially, all mangas are graphic novels. No need to be scared. Graphic novels are like stories sold in comic book form. America makes graphic novels as well. One in particular i know about is Maus (although i think i german dude made it or something.)
