ftp stands for File Transfer Protocol.
This is just one of the many protocols used on the internet, http is the one used to build websites.
To access ftp sites or files, you need an ftp client.
Fortunatley, most browsers such as IE 3 - 6, Firefox, Netscape etc include a ftp client where you simply use ftp:// in the address bar.
Life get more complex with IE7 as Microsoft have determined that you need to find the rather obscure option button to select ftp, which then launches their ftp client.
ftp is usually used as a method for transfering files over the internet, as it can handle all file types.
Often you will see download links which start ftp:// these are links to the ftp site and file concerned.
ftp also supports login and password protection, so you may need to use 'login as' to gain access to your file.
