The best tight end can be broken down into a few categories. The best pass-catching threat is Antonio Gates because of his size and speed, as well as his history of grabbing rebounds which helps him with position and technique. The best blocking tight end is probably Tony Gonzalez because of his experience and size. The best overall tight end would probably be Tony Gonzalez because he can block well, which Antonio Gates still needs help with, and he is always a threat in the red zone. Some better tight ends who will take over once Gonzalez retires in the next couple years are Antonio Gates, Todd Heap, Daniel Graham, Randy McMichael, Jason Witten, and Jeremy Shockey, if he ever learns to stop talking and just do his job.

Straight up best all-round everything TE Antonio Gates. Hes the best receiving blocking and a huge distraction. What most ppl dont know is that Gates went undrafted was recruited for college as a linebacker and didn't play football since 4th year highschool before he got drafted. He was also supposed to be an NBA star. You can see when he is in the end-zone about to catch the ball he boxes the defender out. He is one of a kind and could end up being the best of all time. The chargers breed 'em well Winslow and Gates

Tony G is the best Tight End in football. Both Gonzales and Gates can catch. Gates may be the more athletic of the two now seeing as how Tonys getting a little old, but Gates can't block like Tony. If the Chargers had Gonzales, his blocking alone would add 300 + yards to LTs rushing total.

1. Tony Gonzalez
2. Antonio Gates
3. Jeremy Shockey
4. Vernon Davis
5. Kellen Winslow Jr.
Tony Gonzalez is tough as nails and can make a Middle Linebacker look like a kicker trying to tackle him. He just overpowers everyone and demolishes defenders like no other. Not to mention he also has the record for most TD receptions by a Tight End. Antonio Gates is a beast as well, and he can make the spectacular catches adn is probably faster than Gonzalez, but he isnt quite as powerful as Tony Gonzalez. Jeremy Shockey plays with so much intensity and heart, which makes him so good and fun to watch. Vernon Davis is fast as heck and is definitley going to have a great season. Kellen Winslow had 90 catches this season, and is great, but gets overlooked because his team doesnt to so well.
Another great TE is Todd Heap, but hes past his prime.

currently Antonio Gates is the best tight end. Tony Gonzolez is a close second and if Tony was still in his prime he would be better. Kellen Winslow Jr. is a punk and definitely is not the best tight end. He only had so many receptions because the browns had to check down to him all the time and their offense is terrible. a tight end is a big, easy target for a young developing quarterback to throw to. shockey is not the best tight end, yet he could be. he doesn't spend the necessary time practicing running routes and catching passes with eli manning because shockey would rather go out, party, and get drunk. his lack of dedication to the team is the reason he will never reach his full potential.

Kellen Winslow Jr played last year at 80 % at best do to his torn ACL in 2005 and he still caught the Browns Record of 89 receptions last season along with leading all TE in that category and had the 3 most yards receiving by a TE behind Gates and Gonzalez. he was also the third in 1st downs behind Gates and Gonzalez. All of the 875 receiving yards and 42 first downs came behind an offense that couldn't run the ball like San Diego or Kansas City could. The Chiefs and the Chargers each have one of the best running backs in all of Football in Larry Johnson and LaDamion Tomlinson respectively.

Antonio Gates, he has everything. He can block, catch, get up high for the ball, go over the middle and take that hit and hang on, has speed, and great moves. In the NFL today, I would say Antonio Gates.

Ok guys I hate to break it to you, but Tony Gonzalez is the best TE, Gates, Shockey, and Heap are all great, but Tony is a HOF TE, he paved the way for those guys, and even though hes older he really hasnt lost that step, he may not have blazing speed like Gates, but he's still probably the most valuable member of the Chiefs team, thats being said with LJ on the team, Gonzalez is the best, as of right now, Im not saying Gates wont be just as good, but Gonzalez is the best, right now and possibly the best ever.
