I broke my toe a year ago by dropping a heavy cutting board on it... don't ask! My parents didn't name me "Grace!"... anyway, it turned a ghastly black and blue and swelled to the size of banana. But the nail never came off... it took one year exactly to grow out... there was a black bruise under the nail. It hurt on and off for over 6 months. Even if it is broken, the doctor won't do anything except confirm that it is... Good luck...

ok, so i'll tell you what happened to me first,

i banged one of my fingers and as your husbands toe, it got black and blue. the color thing lasted for about 2 months while fading out. then the nail itself started lifting up and in my case, i had to get a mini-surgery to get about 1/4 of the nail lifted in order to get the entire thing off. that hurt more than the actual accident itself. but the great thing is that the nail grew back right away.

hopefully your hubbie will only have to deal with the discomfort of the color coding finger and not getting the lifting parts caught into fabrics and stuff. while the old nail is lifting, there is a new one growing so it's not like he is going to be nail-less at any point. make sure that you periodically trim his nail as it grows.

and kiss the boo-boo

If he wanted to try and save it he should got a tiny drill bit when it was throbbing and drilled a hole in it with his fingers. Can you say painful? Now it will take a bit for it to come loose and get to where he can finally pull it off (few days to a week). Then yes in time A new one will grow back. I never lost a toe nail but more finger nails than I can remember.

Yeah, if a toenail turns black and blue it falls off eventually, then just grows back. For a few months, it will be half-grown and there will be no nail there.
It happened to me when I was eight. It fell off when I was at a pool party.......wow, that was embarrassing!

My sister did the same thing but she smashed her finger nail in a wooden door. But what our family did they drew a hole in her fingernail. Blood came out but it still was black & blue a little green but it fell off and it grew back!!!

Consult your family doctor, in the meantime, make sure you but a cloth around it as a bandage so it doesn't get infected.
My mother lost most of her pinky finger a couple of years ago, it grew back!
