Giving you a proper answer would take at least a couple class lectures. More if you don't have good math skills and a good understanding of classical mechanics.

As a practicing nuclear physicist with one of the nation's leading National Laboratories, I found that "why" anything happens in physics is not generally addressed. Physics tells us what will happen, but not why it will happen.

We really do not know why energy and mass are equivalent. But we do know they are. Einstein derived the relationship based on theory.

Since then, dozens, if not hundreds of experiements, and all those nuclear power plants and weapons prove that E = delm c^2. Delm = abs|M0 - M1|; where M0 is the mass before and M1 is the mass after either fission or fusion. So the energy is actually derived from a change in mass (delm).

Each time a parent heavy atom is split, it creates child atoms whose combined mass is less than the heavy atom's mass. Each time, two or more lighter atoms are fused together, the new atom's mass is less than the combined masses of the lighter atoms. The differences in mass before and after fission or fusion can be found in the equivalent energy produced by the process. Thus, the delm in E = delm c^2.

Because its basic energy dissipation.
So Power Usage for one second would give an energy equal to M c^2.
In reality to explain Energy is basically simple. Because it would be so obviouly simple it is not quite basically described in physics with out complicated explanation with one still unexplainable.
Energy being a process is not a mass as erroneouly believed.
For this reason ,the Famous physisit Richard Feynman Stated" Scientist really do not understand what is energy"

simple:
E= energy
m=mass
c=speed of light

In simple terms, you can generate an Energy by moving a certain amount of mass (object) to the speed of light.

This is what Einstein ment.
