Yes, birds can represent death (or rather, the way they act can). Although it's an abstract way of thinking that hasn't really been used for a long time! I don't know any Witches that feel there is still significance in it, but if you would like to know- here's what I know of this!
-The Crow (specifically the large black, or the silent crow), is significant of approaching death or impending doom. If it flies insistently above a place of very close to someone or in circles around a house then that is where the death occurs.
-The common sparrow has a very bad reputation! When someone seems to be very ill, they will fly to that person, and then leave so they don't have to experience the death, and to warn others not to fly near there.
-A bird, whose eggs have not yet hatched, will abondon their nest if it is in the property of a damned mortal.
-If a bird is seen eating chicken or any other poultry food, it is a sign that there is death approaching. The birds will be insane with pity for the person and will resort to eating other poultry foods.
-If birds flap repeatedly without leaving their perch when you go near them, it is to caution you that you are close to death if you do not act responsibly, or that someone close to you is in that position.
-If a bird follows you in the street, it means that it expects you not to walk that street again.
-If a bird does not take flight, or move away, when you approach it at a speed, it means that the bird feels you are already dead and merely a wandering spirit. This is supposed to mean you will die soon.
That's all I know! I think it was coincidence though, unless your family is significantly connected to birds. Perhaps you would care to tell me more- my email address is missytetra@yahoo.co.uk. In love and light, Tasha x

Some folks in the old country do think so, to a point where they won't even allow bird pictures or figurines or anything of that sort in the house. They aren't bothered by seeing birds outside, but in some old folk traditions, birds are messengers of the Gods, when one flies into your house, it's another matter. It certainly seems remarkable that it happened to both your grandfather and your great aunt, coincidence or no, what are the odds of such a thing....The meanings assigned to different animals vary according to culture, what one culture may view as an omen of death, another may view quite differently....In some cultures, it only applies to birds that fly in to the house through the chimney, and not if they enter any other way...
Luminous....what a wonderful story....

Hi! I think I can help you with your question. Birds are generally positive symbols in sight. As adults, we understand the concept of a dove being a bird of peace, or an eagle representing our higher self. Usually, if you spot large birds with sharp beaks and massive wings which keep swooping down at them, this could indicate that something had been feared by so-and-so, and he/she could not conquer his/her fear. If the bird(s) is/are flying off into the distance, this may signify disappointment. Sometimes it depends on how they see the bird or simply what kind of bird it is.
Hope it helps!

My father and my mother died 4 months apart. I had written a poem for my father "Ode to an Eagle" and 3 day after his burial there were 2 golden eagles in Feb. (which was very unusual that time of the year or anytime of the year as these birds are about extinct) that flew right over my home and one swooped down and circled my home for around 15 mins. The other one stayed way back in the background of the sky(my mom was still alive at this time). To me it has always symbolized that my Father was soaring like an eagle in his after life and the eagle waiting to the side was my Mother waiting to go to the other side-which she did 4 months later. I felt the most awesome sense of being touched by my Father while the golden eagle flew around my home. They never came back after that.

All of our Creators creatures, except man with his "logical" mind, are in tune with Spirit.
Birds often give us signs of what will come.
But an omen of ill may only be something that will be a letdown for us. Not necessarily DEATH!
And the "death" omen itself, is usually only an omen of the End of a thing in our Life, that has outlived it's usefullness to us. And the Beginning of something New.

It depends on your culture. In my culture Odinn has two Ravens that fly about and tell him what is going on in the world from time to time. They're like his Super Spy Birds or something. We do not fear birds, nor do they represent death to us. They, like squirrels, are simply messengers in my culture.

I know that in some parts of Spain people associate crows with death...But I wouldn't believe it, I think it was a horrible coincidence.
