What cultures?
The Mayan calendar ends on that date. That is the ONLY "world-ending" idea to happen on that date, so far as I am aware of. And does that mean that the world started with the Mayan calendar, in 3000-something B.C.?

How many times in our past has people predicted the doom of the world only to watch the date and hour past and nothing even remotely happened? I dont' think I would concern myself with doomsayers eventually someone might get it right but it would be dumb luck ;-)
Don't believe anything you see on the Discovery channel lately they have been full of themselves.. the only decent shows left there is Dirty Jobs, Deadliest Catch and How It's Made. the rest is 85% baloney.

this is seen as an important date to several cultures as it relates to a cosmic event that only occurs every 26,000 years. the Mayans believed it to be the end date or armaggedon (hope i spelt that correctly). what we need to realise is that this does not mean the end of the world. it means a new beginning. it means that something is going to happen that we launch us into a new age. some cultures belive it is the golden age, an age of no war which biblically means the drawing near of Christs return. in other cultures it is the age of the Solar Plexsus (part of the ascending chakras) an age when the heart governs our thoughts and decisions. another culture believes that as we approach this date we are being evolved throught cosmic radiation which will enable us to unlock more of our brains potential. do not confuse the end of the world with the end of an age or era. this date is one of the most exciting events we will ever bear witness to. don't be fearful of it....embrace it as it means we are moving forward.
p.s. according to the Mayan calender it is to occur at 11:11am GMT 21st December, 2012 so find out what time that relates to for you and where you live. I'm planning a party for it. spent it with good company.

Cultures and religions assimilate information and twist it to their own ends.
The 12-21-2012 date comes from the so-called "end date of the Mayan calendar" but it's based on a misunderstanding--the calendar doesn't go from 12 to 0, it goes from 12 to 13.
It's got nothing to do with the bible, Nostradamus or anything similar.
As far as the Mayans not using our calendar, that's true, but it's easy enough to convert one to the other if you know how.

Dec 21 is the winter solstice. Winter solstice is often associated with death, an ending, a destruction and so forth. Although, this is really not only an ending, but a beginning as well. A beginning of something new, a dawning of something better so to speak. Ancient civilizations used this in myths, religion and so forth. The year 2012 is tied into astronomy/astrology (not that dime store astrology crap that we see today) and the coming of the Aquarian age, of which, the ancients were also aware of.

Yes, I would have dismissed that Mayan thing 12/21/12 myself, EXCEPT that St. Malachy also predicted the antichrist's arrival around 2012 with the 13th Pope, and all his papal predictions have come true. I'm not Catholic, but you can find his predictions online (he was a prophetic priest from centuries ago). So I'm like, coincidence!! And a few years after that, a meteor is supposed to hit earth. With the Iranian leader obtaining nukes, able to mass produce them, bent on destroying America and Israel--I don't doubt the end is upon us!! Yes, we can't predict the day or the hour, but the year seems about right.

I have seen that date in most South American Indian ancient calenders. It has something to do with their knowledge of the stars in the Milky Way if I remember correctly.
Although the world of mankind is so very wicked that I think it will be just about the year give or take only a few. That is just my opinion and the Bible reminds us that ONLY God Almighty Knows the Exact Hour and DATE.
Let's hope the Indigenous People are at least close, I cannot stand much more wickedness!

I wasnt aware that there was a "specific" date that the World was supposed to end!
It seems that every culture has a "doomsday" scenario and there are always those in the culture who want to predict the "end of the World" and when it will happen.
I will predict that when the LORD is good and ready, HE will let us know by coming in all HIS glory and take HIS children home with him. What day? Its for HIM to know, and for us to find out when HE decides to come from the Clouds.
I wish you well...
Jesse

According to the Bible it says no man or angel will know the coming of the Lord which will be the end of the world as we know it. So I can't buy into the December 2012 theory.

Did they even use the same calender? And was this 2012 with the Gergorian calender or the Julian one? Does that only apply to countries that use the Gergorian calender? I'm always confused about this part with specific date predictions, perhaps the people predicting the future predicted we would change the calender, who knows.
