As an Non Resident Indian, it was expected from you to have clear knowledge of the immigration rules. This is just pity that you do not have a idea that you can not undertake journey to any country without a valid passport and a valid Visa. As India happens to be your country, question of Visa does not arise but condition of valid passport remain.
Any way simply go to the embassy, your problem will be solved in 24 hours straight.

No you can not travel to india without a valid ( renewed original ) PASSPORT. Traveling to India from US will necesarily require visa which is affixed on the valid original passport. Try toget the renewed passport. If there is any urgency of coming to India explain the same to the passport office.
